Back-to-School Immune Boost: Vaccines and Sleep Hygiene for Boulder County Kids

August always feels like a sprint. Summer camps are winding down, supply lists are growing, and schedules start becoming more rigid again. In the rush to get backpacks packed and sports physicals scheduled, it’s easy to miss the opportunity that back-to-school season offers: a chance to reset your child’s foundation for good health.

In family medicine, we see it every year: kids head back to school, and within a few weeks, the sniffles, coughs, and stomach bugs start making the rounds. Shared classroom spaces, changing sleep schedules, and cooler mornings all play a role. The good news is that there’s a lot we can do to set kids up for a healthier school year, especially if we start now.

The Case for a Vaccine Check-In

If your child hasn’t had a well visit in the last year, now is the time to make sure their immunizations are current.

Here in Colorado, school vaccine requirements are clearly outlined, but they don’t always align with when your child is due for boosters. And if your child changed schools, caught up late, or missed a visit during the pandemic years, they may have gaps that aren’t obvious until you’re filling out school forms the night before orientation.

Here are a few vaccines we often catch up on this time of year:

  • DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis): This series starts in infancy, but a booster is typically needed around age 11.

  • MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) and Varicella: Both are required for school entry, but may need follow-up if a child didn’t receive both doses.

  • Meningococcal (MenACWY): This one is especially important for middle schoolers and high schoolers, particularly those in sports or dorm-like housing.

  • HPV: Often overlooked, the HPV vaccine is one of the most effective cancer prevention tools we have. Recommended starting at age 9, it’s ideal to begin before adolescence.

  • COVID-19 and Flu: Seasonal, but important. Flu vaccines usually roll out in early fall, and COVID boosters are often updated around the same time.

We also look at your child’s individual health needs and exposures. Kids with asthma, autoimmune conditions, or family members who are immunocompromised may need additional protection.

Getting caught up before school starts means fewer disruptions later. It also sends a strong message to your child that health is something we plan for, not just something we react to.

The Other Side of the Immunity Equation: Sleep

If there’s one thing that gets completely upended during summer, it’s bedtime. Kids stay up later, sleep in longer (when they can), and shift into a rhythm that feels completely incompatible with a 7:30 a.m. bus stop.

Unfortunately, lack of sleep does more than make mornings hard. It weakens the immune system. Kids who are overtired are more prone to colds, have more trouble focusing in school, and often show more behavioral challenges during the first few weeks back.

That’s why one of the most powerful immune-boosting tools we can offer our kids doesn’t come from a pharmacy; it comes from a good night’s rest.

Here are a few ways to support your child’s sleep hygiene now, before the school year begins:

1. Start shifting bedtime in 15-minute increments.

A sudden schedule change is hard on anyone, especially kids. Gradually moving bedtime earlier can help their circadian rhythm catch up before the first day.

2. Set a wind-down routine.

This doesn’t have to be elaborate. Just 20–30 minutes of calm: dimming lights, no screens, maybe reading or listening to soft music can signal to the body that it’s time to sleep.

3. Keep bedrooms cool, dark, and quiet.

Especially during the final weeks of summer, hot rooms and long daylight hours can interfere with melatonin production. Blackout shades, a fan, or a white noise machine can help.

4. Limit sugar and caffeine in the evening.

This includes unexpected sources like chocolate or soda. These can linger in the system longer than you think and make it harder for kids to settle down.

5. Set consistent wake-up times, even on weekends.

It’s tempting to let them “catch up” on rest, but erratic sleep-wake patterns can make the adjustment to school mornings much harder.

This isn’t just about avoiding germs. Consistent sleep improves concentration, mood, and physical stamina. For tweens and teens, in particular, it also plays a critical role in emotional regulation and hormone balance.
